4TH RIO TEXAS ANNUAL CONFERENCE JUNE 6 - 9, 2018

Annual Conference 2018.jpg

The 2018 Rio Texas Annual Conference will be held June 6-9 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. This year's theme is "From Come & See to Go & Do: Rethinking the Five Practices."  It has been ten years since the release of Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations by Robert Schnase, Bishop of the Rio Texas Conference. Much has changed in those ten years.

The conference will focus on the shift from attractional assumptions toward missional strategies. In the past, churches assumed that people would go to church if it provided excellent, welcoming worship services. Church pastors, delegates, and lay leaders will learn the importance of taking the Christian faith out into their networks and neighborhoods.

Time to Fill the Truck for Disaster Survivors Again Lenten Disaster Clothing Drive. March 1st, Ash Wednesday - Week of April 3rd

Remember last year, when Johnson City finished filling the collection truck for the annual disaster used clothing drive?

When the truck left JC, it was jam-full to the doors with used clothing. Problem was, it hadn’t finished making all its stops — there were more to go — so a second truck had to be re-routed to finish the run.

Let’s do it again!

It's the annual interfaith clothing drive that stocks the warehouse ahead of the spring flood and tornado season, so when a disaster requires quick delivery of used clothes, it’s ready to go.

In Johnson City, the First United Methodist Church heads the drive, but all churches (clubs, businesses, and individuals) are welcome to participate, and obviously lots do so. The campaign officially starts on March 1st, Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Churches will collect clothes until the week of April 3rd, when the truck begins picking up the collections.

The truck is from the Seventh-day Adventists, who make the rounds of participating churches across Central Texas, then take it all to the Adventists’ warehouse in Alvarado, south of Ft Worth, where the clothing is sorted, sanitized, packaged and stored to await a call from a disaster manager who needs it.

When that call comes, the Adventists load their truck and the next morning it’s at the disaster shelter, waiting for survivors to come put on fresh clothes.

“But that plan only works if we have done our part first,” explained Pastor Lee Romero of the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City.

“It starts with you cleaning out your closets of clothes you’ll never wear again, and bringing them to your church, or to ours. We’ll store it until the truck comes, then send it on its way.”

Last year, more than two dozen churches and countless individuals donated to the campaign, from Lampasas down to Carrizo Springs. There’s always room for more.

“Last year, the semi was so full after it stopped here, we literally had to jump out and slam the door,” Romero recalled. "Luckily, the Adventists already had a second truck making part of the route, so it finished the part the semi couldn’t hold. We’d sure like to fill that second truck, too.”

The campaign needs work clothes the survivors can wear to clean up their homes. That includes, shoes, hats, and belts. They do not accept used underwear, swimsuits, or socks. They don’t have to be on hangers, or even clean…that’ll be taken care of in the processing. Boxes and bags of clothes all are OK.

“We know we’re still a month away from the official start date,” Romero said, “but now’s the time to be rooting through the closets and setting aside what you don’t want. And, yes, we’ll take donations early.

“Sometime later this year, somewhere, somebody you’ll never know will bless you for it.”

DEADLINE FOR SHIPPING TREATS FOR TROOPS

Deadline for shipping a box to an APO address for Christmas delivery is Dec 17, according to the Post Office, but that is for delivery by Christmas Eve, and doesn’t allow for glitches along the way. To make sure it’s there on time, ship earlier. To give recipients time to enjoy gifts such as holiday decorations before Christmas, ship as many days before the 17th as you want them to have your box. Ship now and they can hang tinsel on the Thanksgiving turkey; ship mid-Nov and they’ll put your Santa up on Dec 1. A wreath shipped Dec 1 can be hanging mid-month. Our church will ship early in Dec, a little later than I’d like, but we’re also filling shoe-boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and we don’t want to walk on that collection. Any date after mid-Nov works fine. And you don’t have to wait until all your boxes are filled…they can go as you have ‘em ready.

Harvest Sunday 2016

Rio Texas Conference - Harvest Sunday 2016
Sunday – November 6, 2016
Or any Sunday that is convenient for the local church

Through this special offering approved by the Annual Conference, Rio Texas Conference congregations will support their district’s designated hunger ministry as well as Food Pantries in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and the Indigenous Women’s Vegetable Gardening and Leadership Project, Guatemala.

Participation in this offering embraces the UMC’s goals of “engaging in ministry with the poor” and “combating the diseases of poverty by improving health globally.”

The 2016 Harvest Sunday offering will be divided as follows:

  • 1/3 of the total collected in each district will be returned to that district for hunger ministries there
  • 2/3 of the total offering will be divided equally for:

    • Food pantries in the El Valle District
Several of the poorest counties in the country can be found in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.  In some parts of the Valley, 1 in 2 children go to bed hungry every day.  A portion of the Harvest Sunday offering will be used to help provide food for our neighbors in special need in the Rio Grande Valley, right here in our annual conference.

    • Indigenous Women’s Vegetable Gardening and Leadership Project, Guatemala - Advance #3021566
Forty Mayan women are being trained in organic farming techniques and they in turn will train another 850 more women in their communities.  Benefits of the project are (1) promotion of organic farming, which preserves the land; (2) improved family nutrition; (3) preservation of native food crop species; (4) promotion of women’s leadership skills; and (5) creation of a model of development that can be replicated elsewhere. This project complements the current geographical mission study on “Latin America.”

Congregations will not receive special Harvest Sunday offering envelopes this year, in an effort to send 100% of the funds received toward these urgent needs.  Congregations are asked to send their 2016 Harvest Sunday offering directly to the Conference Treasurer’s office.
Thank you for your generosity toward our neighbors in need.

ALL LAY DELEGATES IN THE HILL COUNTRY DISTRICT-DISTRICT CONFERENCE NOTICE
Just a reminder – our Hill Country District Conference will be Sunday, May 15, 4:00 p.m. at the Blanco United Methodist Church.

The agenda, the district nominations, and the district budget for 2017 has been emailed to our clergy delegates. They are requested to pass this along to their lay delegates.
There are very few changes in those leading in the various positions and there will be no change proposed for our district budget.

Rev. Bill Johnson and the Committee on District Superintendency are sponsoring a reception following the District Conference that will honor our retiring District Superintendent Bill Henderson. Rev. Johnson has asked, at Rev. Henderson’s request, that any retirement gifts be directed to the new Casa del Buen Samaritano, a new dormitory being purchased for relief work with Mission: Border Hope in Eagle Pass.

Plan to be there at this important meeting and celebrate Rev. Bill Henderson's retirement. Any local church members who would like to attend the reception are invited to come as well.
